Journey Brings the Final Frontier Tour to Los Angeles

Journey will return to Los Angeles on Sept. 12 for a stop at Crypto.com Arena, opening the newly added fall leg of the band’s Final Frontier Tour.

The extension adds 40 North American dates to a tour that began in Hershey, Pennsylvania, in February. After Los Angeles, Journey will continue through the United States and Canada before ending the run Nov. 28 with a hometown finale at Chase Center in San Francisco. The Los Angeles show begins at 7:30 p.m., with doors at 6 p.m.

Billed as “An Evening With Journey,” the tour gives the band the full night rather than pairing them with a traditional opening act. Recent stops have stretched beyond two hours and moved well past a greatest-hits-only set, mixing staples such as “Faithfully,” “Wheel in the Sky,” “Open Arms,” “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” “Any Way You Want It” and, inevitably, “Don’t Stop Believin’” with deeper cuts from across the catalog. A June performance in Pennsylvania ran 26 songs and roughly two and a half hours.

That format makes sense for a band with more than five decades of material behind it. Since forming in the 1970s, Journey has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, earned 19 Top 40 singles and 25 gold and platinum albums, while Escape and the band’s Greatest Hits collection have both reached Diamond-level sales. Journey was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

The current lineup features founding guitarist Neal Schon alongside Jonathan Cain, Arnel Pineda, Deen Castronovo, Jason Derlatka and Todd Jensen. The arrangement also gives several members opportunities to take lead vocals throughout the night, making the show less a recreation of one era of Journey than a survey of the different versions the band has become.

For Los Angeles, the significance is fairly straightforward: Crypto.com Arena will be the first stop of Journey’s final major fall run, beginning the last stretch toward San Francisco with some of rock radio’s most durable songs still filling arenas.
